The Three Farmers
Mr. Fox lives in a hole under a large tree with his wife and four small children. Every night, he sneaks out to steal food from three neighboring farmers: Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. Boggis is an enormously fat chicken farmer who eats three boiled chickens smothered with dumplings every day. Bunce is a pot-bellied duck and goose farmer who eats thousands of doughnuts stuffed with goose-liver paste. Bean is a thin, clever turkey and apple farmer who drinks nothing but gallons of strong cider. Together, they are the meanest, nastiest farmers in the valley, and they decide they have had enough of Mr. Fox's thievery.
The Siege
The three farmers team up and wait outside Mr. Fox's hole with shotguns. When Mr. Fox steps out, they open fire, but they only manage to shoot off his tail. Determined to kill the fox family, the farmers bring in giant mechanical excavators and tractors to dig up the entire hill. To escape the machines, the Fox family digs deeper and deeper into the earth, barely staying ahead of the shovels. The farmers eventually realize they cannot dig the foxes out, so they deploy an army of their workers to surround the hill, waiting to starve the animals out.
The Clever Plan
After three days without food or water, Mr. Fox hits upon a brilliant idea. Using their superior digging skills, he and his children dig a massive underground tunnel system. They navigate directly under the floorboards of Boggis's Chicken House Number One, where they easily gather dozens of chickens. Mr. Fox sends his children back to Mrs. Fox with the food while he continues his underground operation.
The Underground Feast
Along the way, Mr. Fox runs into Badger, who reveals that all the digging animals—including the Rabbits, Moles, and Weasels—are starving to death because of the farmers' siege. Mr. Fox invites them all to join his grand plan. Together, they dig tunnels directly into Bunce's storehouse of ducks and geese, and finally into Bean's secret underground cider cellar, where they narrowly avoid being caught by the farmers' suspicious cook.
Conclusion
With an incredible abundance of food and cider, Mr. Fox hosts a magnificent underground feast for all the starving animals. He proposes a permanent solution: instead of ever going above ground again, they will build an underground village and use their tunnels to take whatever they need from the farmers in secret. The animals celebrate their freedom and cleverness, while above ground, the rain pours down on Boggis, Bunce, and Bean, who sit by their trenches with their shotguns, still waiting for Mr. Fox to come out.
